Panama,
so much more than just a canal !

Located at the southern end of Central America, Panama is an 800 km long bridge where the wildlife of South- and North America meet and intermingle. It is a proud nation that respects its seven indigenous peoples and that celebrates its Spanish heritage with frequent and colourful festivals.

Located blissfully south of the hurricane belt, the country, whose Indian name means 'abundance of fish', has mostly evaded the tourists' radar screen despite having much more to offer than its wildly popular western neighbour, Costa Rica.

There are 1518 Islands off the coasts of Panama and more than 30 national parks and protected areas. There is remote and accessible rainforest with more than 400 bird species, mountain hiking, famous surfing and windsurfing, kayaking, white water rafting and historic ruins. There is the big and cosmopolitan Panama City with many good restaurants and great party- and nightlife.

And, of course, there is the canal - a must see for the visitor.

Somewhat sadly, more deep-sea fishing records have been broken in the Pacific waters of Panama than anywhere else in the world. Onthe other hand, it's another indication how plentiful the marine life here is.

If you ever found yourself saying, 'Oh, you should have visited this place 10 years ago, before it was overrun by tourists,' chances are that you would leave Panama today feeling you had been here just at the right time.
